OCEANS EXPLORATION EXPEDITION 2017:

Western Indian Ocean

It is that time again, when the team puts its collective intellect together to start planning the next of the Moving Sushi Ocean Exploration expeditions, and in true style, our forthcoming plans are nothing short of ambitious.

The team has entered into the preliminary planning phase, where we develop a proposed scientific and work plan so that we can propose realistic outcomes, goals and strategies to make the contributions of expedition 2017 truly remarkable and unique.  We are exceptionally grateful to the SHUTTLEWORTH FOUNDATION, who has provided a flash grant to Moving Sushi to get the expedition planning underway.

Although details for EXPEDITION 2017 will not be available for now, the process of expedition development and planning does not mean that you can’t be involved.  In saying this, however the basics that we will be discussing include, but are not mutually exclusive to the following:

·      Stereo-videography for coral reef fish surveys (same technology as used on the East African Marine transect)

·      Coral reef survey techniques

·      Possible coral reef and coral reef fish rapid health assessment tools

·      ROV (submersible) use to examine deeper water corals and/or fish communities

·      Socially and geographically relevant data that contributes to management, conservation etc.

·      Open access data platforms including open access educational tools, info-graphics, data analysis, cloud use etc.

·      Setting up a series of global challenges i.e. adding to the data platforms, working on solutions from the data etc.

·      Media platforms, filming etc.

·      Survey locations

·      What other tools can be incorporated that will ensure that EXPEDITION 2017 will make a fundamental contribution to science and society

·      Expedition vessels

·      Funding possibilities

Currently, we are working on the production funding for EXPEDITION 2013, and hope to release the documentary of this incredible expedition in early 2016.

If you have any queries, ideas or comments, they are most welcome, and we look forward to the beginning of what will be an incredibly valuable EXPEDITION 2017 scientifically, biologically and most importantly, socially.

Look forward to hearing from you
